Port Orange is a dynamic, growing area, which was carved out many years ago from acres and acres of orange groves. The city has experienced tremendous growth in recent years, with many new restaurants, new schools and the construction of “The Pavillion”, a shopping, dining and entertainment venue situated by I-95. Strict building requirements have resulted in an aesthetically pleasing environment with a strong sense of community.
New housing developments have sprung up on the west side of the city. Port Orange Days is an annual celebration held in October, with rides, food and special events. Recreational facilities abound with numerous sports programs for youths.
Port Orange is only minutes from the beaches, Daytona International Speedway, colleges
(Daytona State College, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Bethune Cookman College, Stetson University, and The University of Central Florida), International Hair Academy and Palmer Chiropractic School. Orlando is only one hour away.
Port Orange Employment – Port Orange serves as a bedroom community to the Daytona beach area. Although it has traditional local employment, opportunities can be found with the area’s largest employers are Halifax Health, The Volusia County School District, Florida Hospital Ormond Memorial, NASCAR, Daytona International Speedway, and the various colleges and universities – Daytona State College, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Bethune Cookman College, Stetson University, and The University of Central Florida. Palmer Chiropractic and International Hair Academy are local employers. With its close proximity to West Volusia County, Seminole County and New Smyrna Beach, many residents commute to jobs in those areas.
Port Orange Schools – Port Orange Schools are part of the Volusia County School District. Information on schools can be obtained at the Volusia County School District website. Growth in the community has necessitated new schools and there are a number of newer schools. Spruce Creek High School serves area students and has an International Baccalaureate Program which draws students from the greater Daytona Beach area. Atlantic High School also serves the Port Orange community. Parochial schools are Warner Christian Academy (South Daytona) and Father Lopez Catholic High School (Daytona Beach).
